Vera Bradley was founded in 1982 in March in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The company was founded by Patricia Miller and Barbara Bradley Backgaard. Barbara Bradley Backgaard, who graduated from Marymount college in 1962, named the design company after her mother, Vera Bradley. The story goes that the two women got the idea for Vera Bradley's purses while sitting at an airport waiting for a flight. Apparently the two women noticed a lack of luggage that appealed to women.

What keeps Vera Bradley's purses fresh is the company's constant releasing of new designs and patterns and retiring of old designs and patterns. New Vera Bradley purses tend to be released in January and July. When new patterns and designs are released, old ones tend to be retired. Additionally, the company will release limited edition Vera Bradley's purses, in which only a certain number of the purses or other items are manufactured and when they are gone, they are gone.
